Building a better shopping brief in ten minutes
The concise information that helps a shopper move from an open-ended request to suitable options.
Planning · Shoppin Journal
A useful shopping brief covers the purpose, product, recipient, specifications, budget, location, deadline, and rules for acceptable alternatives.
The eight useful details
Include purpose, product type, recipient, size or dimensions, style references, budget, required location, and deadline. Add acceptable alternatives only where you genuinely have flexibility.
- What is the item for?
- What must be exact?
- What can be substituted?
- What is the complete budget?
- When and where is it needed?
Show, do not only describe
Reference photographs, product links, screenshots, and an example of what you dislike can communicate taste more accurately than broad labels such as premium or traditional.
Confirm priorities
If budget, exact match, speed, and location conflict, rank them. The shopper can then make sensible trade-offs rather than guessing.
